We went out yesterday and the visiblity was excellent on the major Key West snorkeling spots in front of the  island.

Visibility was over 50 feet most of the day.

We shot this little video in 20 feet or so of water, interesting stuff under rocks

We took a picture of a bonnet head shark, don’t get too excited he was probably less then 2 feet long and very scared of people.

Probably the best snorkeling spots in Key West Florida that are reachable without chartering a private boat would be the four main sanctuaries south of Key West. The sanctuaries are called Sand Key , Rock Key, Eastern Dry Rocks and Western Sambo.

They are farthest offshore, which in general often means clearer water and their sanctuary status means larger fish are common and more likely to be visible.

Sometimes in windy weather these spots won’t be accessible and there can be awesome snorkeling a stones throw from Key West but conditions are more iffy.

At least in front of Key West, was out there for a couple hours and took a few pics

Just some of the common corals you would see on a Key West Snorkeling Trip

Small fish such as this Lane Snapper and Porkfish are very common in the waters around Key West.

But it changes often, yesterday the visibility was scarcely over 10 feet in front of Key West. It looked like it was clearing up heading west, so the shallows in western dry rocks would probably be ok for snorkeling.

There is cold front blowing through and the gulf stream is close so these conditions probably won’t last long.

We did a couple key west snorkeling trips with past week and the water visibilty ranged from 20-40 feet.

Water is cooler, most people would want to wear a wetsuit or shorty if you are in the water for any length of time.

Some pictures from last weeks trips out to the reef
